Sen. Edward Kennedy is injured in a plane crash in western Massachusetts.

Kennedy (D-Mass.) and Sen. Birch Bayh (D-Ind.) are injured and another passenger and the pilot are killed when their small plane crashes in Southampton. Kennedy was is on his way to accept the endorsement of the Democratic state convention. His recuperation takes six months and leaves him with chronic back pain for the rest of his life.
